Day 3: Hygge-ly Day in Copenhagen

After sleeping for 12 hours, we all woke up at about 4am ready to go. Yes, that means we went to sleep at 4pm. We leisurely got ready and headed out for some coffee. We were out and about an hour and a half  before the sun came up at 8:30. Short days up here. Here is our first hygge-ly Cafe, the Espresso House.

Hygge, what is that?

Between the lights, candles, and this delicious cinnamon roll treat, it was definitely Hygge.

The view from the cafe, a hotel that looked like an advent calendar.

We started adventuring out after the sun came up, but we didn’t make it too far until we were in another Hygge-ly space, Cafe Ermano.

Then, we set off for our first walking tour of the trip.

We all had some favorite facts from the tour. This was one of mine. The Barometer tower in Copenhagen not only told the temperature on the facade, it tells the people of Copenhagen when it’s going to rain or when they can ride their bikes. If the weather is bike friendly, the lady on a bike pops out. If it is going to rain, the lady with the umbrella pops out.

Another of the interesting facts from the day was that the city buildings are actually pretty young (comparatively). They had 2 great fires that took out most of the old city. The only part that survived was this street that used to be the city’s public toilet and red light district.

After two great fires, the city thought that was enough. They came up with the first fire service in the area. Horse and buggies that came running when they heard of a fire. The building below was a church first, but this tower became the first fire watching tower. They would survey the city from the top in hopes to know when to go running.

After a couple hours of listening intently, we were all ready to get out of the cold and warm up. We fell into one of the weirdest dining experiences yet. The moment we walked in we fought our  first instincts to run. Mainly because the waitress had already taken Kelly’s coat, so we were stuck. We had an actually delicious New Nordic meal. Or so we think, when we asked the waitress if that is what it was, she seemed super annoyed by the question and said well yes probably you would call this that. Well, whatever it was, it was different and delicious. I just thought I should post the weirdest parts. Kelly ordered coffee and it was delivered with this puff of white cotton candy. The waitress just dropped it off and walked away like it was normal. This is Kris trying to hold herself together. Why cotton candy?

Another weird part was their bathroom. You turn the corner to this big black dog sculpture... what?

After lunch, we went on a canal tour around the city. It was freezing and we all were starting to get sleepy. But great views and information about the city. We didn’t see the mermaid the last time we were here, so we added that to the list. Still not sure what the fuss is all about... here’s MO showing off his photo skills.

Aebelskivers! Finally! Yummo!

Our last stop for the day, Tivoli Gardens. I can’t imagine this place could be cooler any other time of year. Christmas lights everywhere.

It was a very long but amazing day.  Even though the sun was only up for for 7 hours. We used every moment of it and then some. Off to sleep, we made it a little later today. Think some of us might even be awake until 7pm...

Tomorrow, Amsterdam and boarding the cruise!!
